Charla Asset Management: Going Beyond Technical Debt

Abstract

Managing technical debt (TD) has become crucial in large-scale software development since software development organisations tend to place too much emphasis on delivery. However, focusing solely on TD is not enough to ensure the long-term sustainability of software systems. This talk introduces a broader perspective—Asset Management and Asset Degradation — which encompasses the technical artefacts and all types of assets, such as code, architecture, tests, and organisational processes. By understanding the degradation of these assets over time and the propagation of this degradation across the system, we can better manage their quality and preserve their value over time.

This presentation will delve into why Technical Debt is only a part of the equation and how organisational factors can accelerate the degradation of our assets. We will share findings from empirical studies, discussing how team behaviour, code ownership, and organisational structures influence asset degradation. In the last part of the talk, we will introduce our vision of using usage data to measure user value and how to use this, together with process and product quality data, to drive decisions on what to build next or how to invest in maintenance, to build more sustainable software products.

Biografía:

Javier Gonzalez Huerta is an associate professor of software engineering at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH), where he also serves as deputy head for research in the software engineering department and program manager for the Master of Science in Engineering program in software development. He earned his

PhD in Computer Science from Universitat Politècnica de València in 2014. With a research focus on technical debt and asset management, software process improvement, and sustainable software development, Javier collaborates extensively with industry leaders such as Fortnox, Ericsson, Spotify and Swedbank to bridge the gap between academia and practical software engineering challenges.

His work emphasises the importance of managing software assets, technical debt, and the alignment between architectures and organisations to ensure long-term sustainability in software projects, especially in large-scale organisations. He has authored over 45 peer-reviewed research papers and frequently serves as a reviewer and committee member for international conferences in the software engineering domain. In addition to his academic work, Javier is passionate about fostering sustainable software engineering practices and continues to actively engage in projects that promote innovative approaches to software development. More information on his projects and publications can be found here.
